What happenes if I purchased a domain and someone else 2 years later trademarks that domain name?
Q. I purchased a domain name and im ready to start my business and than i get an email saying that that name is now trademaked. So what can I do without giving into there demands.

A. When you purchase a domain name from an online registrar, this guarantees that you will be the sole user of that name for as long as you keep it registered. So every year you need to renew the registration to be the sole owner of the domain name.

What happens to my domain name if the company that I registered it through goes out of business?
Q. If I register a domain name with a very inexpensive "fly-by-night" company and they go out of business, could that cause problems for me maintaining the domain name? My actual web pages would be hosted by another company.

A. What happens with your domain name completely depends on how the domain name is set up. If the domain is set up with your name as the owner and administrative contact, and with your correct email, the renewal system should notify you when it comes due, even if the company that originally registered went out of business. If your contact email is not listed, and your company name is not listed, if the company that registers it goes out of business, you won't get notified when the domain name comes due, and the first you'll find out is when your domain goes down because it has not been renewed. If it is registered under such a company's account, you would have to file a request for resolution with the company that is providing the… [cont.]

How important is a top level domain name relatively to a subdomain when creating a website?
Q. From SEO point of view, how much does it matter if I purchase a new domain name for each website or I create all my websites as subdomains, when creating a subdomain I can target a specific keyword, without worrying about it not being free!
Asked by GP - Sat Oct 1 15:07:10 2011 - Search Engine Optimization - 2 Answers - Comments
A. Search engines treat subdomains as separate domains. Example: any CMS - wordpress, joomla - where each hosted blog is a subdomain which is obviously treated differently: your blog on gadgets is streated as blog on gadgets (granted that you SEO it well) and another blog on the same CMS will be treated as blog about "widgets" So subdomain is not a bad option, especially if you are budget conscious.

To be able to sell a domain name do I need to buy the domain name in a different way?
Q. To be able to sell a domain name do I need to buy the domain name in a different way? I wonder if I just buy a domain name for example from yahoo, can I sell the name to the third party? Isn't that simple as buying and selling a car? What are the important points that I should consider through this buying and reselling procedure? Thank you very much.
Asked by Gokhan K - Tue Sep 18 23:06:40 2007 - Other - Business & Finance - 2 Answers - 1 Comments
A. No need to buy the domain name in any special way. Once you buy the domain name you have rights to it and can do whatever you want with it. You will have to sell the domain name to a third party getting payment on your own terms, and then you can simply transfer the domain name to that party. One thing to remember when you do buy a domain name your are not allowed to transfer it for 60 days after purchase. So you need to hold onto it for 2 months before reselling.

How do you put two names as owner of a domain name?
Q. Me and a partner are buying a domain name of value. I want to know how, after we have both paid half and half for it, how do we list BOTH our names as owners of this domain? Thanks.
Asked by Seven - Wed Nov 16 03:16:49 2011 - Programming & Design - 1 Answers - Comments
A. the WHOIS database normally only supports a single name and or Business name. My suggestion would be to register the name under a business, that both of you would have a 50/50 ownership . Officially it would be owned by the company and you can put each others information under the admin/tech/billing sections. The person who would be listed as the "owner" then becomes only the person who processed the transaction. I have some partnerships and do the same thing so I can buy domains where they have restrictions.

How do I remove my domain name from google sites?
Q. I bought a domain name on google, thinking I was just buying the domain name. Nope. Google make it impossible to customize your site or to upload FTP files. How does backordering a domain name work?
Q. I entered a domain name to order, and it said it was already in use but that for $18.99 I could backorder it. Is that a yearly fee or one time fee until the name becomes available? Also, should I contact the current owner directly since their registration info is listed publicly and ask if they want to selll it to me? What would be the procedure to do that? Thanks!

A. Go to www.pool.com There's no cost to place a backorder. If the domain becomes available, they try to get it for you. If they get it, that's when you get charged.

What do you do after registering a domain name?
Q. I want to register a domain name and create a website. I can get a domain name for about 7 bucks...but what happens after I buy it? How do I work on the site? I have hosting already. Will they give me a login or something after registering the domain?
Asked by thisthingsucks - Mon Jul 23 12:30:35 2007 - Small Business - 7 Answers - 1 Comments
A. When you register a domain name you will have to get your hosting either through that company or through another one. If you set up your hosting and domain through the same company then they should give you everything you need to work on your site right there. If you set up with another hosting company then you will need to either forward your website to your other hosting company or you will need to Change your DNS to your other hosting company. Either one will help you with that through support.

A. When you get a domain at Go Daddy they will provide a minimum webspace at least for a webpage. Then if you go into the DNS file it creates for your domain (called a Zone File) it will be quite clear. Lets say you got example.com There will be example.com and an IP www.example.com and an IP mailservers to handle the mail for example.com with their IPs possible some others such as ftp.example.com and gallery.example.com You can just go ahead and change any of those you want to your IP number and save it. Anywhere from 1 day to a week it will wash all thru the caches on the net to make it official for everyone But remember, DNS is just Domain NAME server. It translates the name, to an address. A. Step 1: Register your domain name. You can register a domain name at yahoo or at godaddy.com. Step 2: Get web hosting. YOu can get web hosting thru Yahoo or Godaddy, or a gazillion other web hosting companies on line. You will likely only need a teeny bit of disk space for your site, but you may want to make sure you have at least 500mb of space so that you have enough room to have email accounts associated with your website/domain. Get a UNIX/Red Hat/Linux/Apache type account. You don't need to pay for "windows" hosting. You should pay between $7 and $20 per month for hosting... less, and you don't know what kind of customer service you are going to get, more, and you are paying too much.
