Are NTFS permissions on local computers ONLY available if a domain is present?
Q. I have only NTFS partitions on my XP-Pro machine. My XP-Pro book talks about modifying NTFS permissions on a folder. "Right-click the file or folder, click Properties, and then click the Security tab.", it says. But there IS not security tab! Only available tabs are: General, Sharing, Customize. What point am i missing?

A. You probably have "Simple File Sharing" enabled. Turn that off and you should be able to set those permissions. This article is pretty comprehensive on the subject.

How do users get permissions in MySql when they log into my website?
Q. I have a MySql database set up called users. The only things required to register to my website are a username and password. When this is completed, the database populates with the users info as requested. How does MySql make this new users permissions to have it where they can now download files from my website? As of now anyone can download and take my sites files without logging in. How do I stop that also? Thanks in advance for any help.
Asked by Web Master - Tue Jun 1 17:17:11 2010 - - 1 Answers - Comments

A. Essentially what happens is you need to connect to the database through a scripting language to authenticate users. Once a user has logged in, you create a token, usually by creating a session, and then the user will have access to your file downloads. The basic process is: 1. User logs in. 2. After login, a home page with links will load. 3. When user clicks on the download page, the download page will check to see if the user has a valid session, or token. If so, the user is granted access. 4. On the download page, file names will appear as links, but they should not link directly to the file. There should be an intermediate page that will take the file name and process the download (similar to the source link for Smart File… [cont.]

How do I set folder permissions in Windows XP?
Q. Windows XP won't allow me to change the permissions for my folders. I've looked around, and it says to use the Security tab. I don't have a security tab in the properties page, so, can someone tell me how to make this all work? I want to play World of Warcraft, but it won't allow access to the folder for the patching system. Please and thank you in advance!

A. Apparently, Windows XP Home doesn't have that tab in Normal Mode. Windows XP Pro may. But that doesn't mean you can't do it in XP Home. You just have to do it in Safe Mode. To get into Safe Mode: 1.Log out and reboot your machine. 2.When the machine starts the reboot sequence, press the F8 key repeatedly. 3.Select Safe Mode from the resulting menu. 4.When the login screen comes up, log in with your username (if it shows up -- I think only users with Admin privileges do) or as Administrator. 5.The machine will continue booting, but the Windows desktop will look different. Now follow the instructions you've found elsewhere. Hope that helps.

A. You have to take ownership of the drive folders: To take ownership and grant full control (or read write) permissions of files or folders in Windows Vista, do these steps. Step 0 - log in as an administrator! 1. In Windows Explorer window, locate the files or folders that you want to take ownership and grant or change full control or other access permissions. 2. Right click on the file or directory, and then select Properties on the right click menu. 3. Click on Security tab. 4. Click on Advanced button at the bottom. 5. In a Advanced Security Settingsa dialog window, click on Owner tab. 6. Here you will be able to see current owner (i.e. TrustedInstaller). To take ownership of the object, click on the Edit button. How do I apply permissions to a folder that won't give me access?
Q. I have a folder on my external drive that I tried to apply permissions to, and it gave me the message "An error occured while applying security information" Any suggestions on how to gain permission rights to it? Thanks in advance
Asked by Steve - Thu Aug 28 00:20:18 2008 - - 1 Answers - Comments

A. Most likely you formatted the external drive as a NTFS drive and you don't have the permission to change the permissions. Logging on as administrator should give you those rights. If it doesn't, and you have read rights, copy the folder and all it's contents. You can copy it to a CD or a FAT formatted drive. This copy will get rid of the rights. If you don't have and can't get read rights, then you need to look for some special tools.

How do you make it so the owner of a file or folder can't change the permissions in Windows 2000 Server?
Q. I want to create a directory share for Windows 2000 Server that any user can write to. However, I want it so when users add or create files, they can't view or modify others' data. This works out fine, but how do you make it so the owner of a folder can't change the permissions, while still leaving them as the owner? Otherwise users could deny Admins permissions to that file, and then admins would have to reset the permissions for that file which can be time-consuming. Any ideas?
Asked by Dustin Software - Mon Nov 6 14:34:12 2006 - - 1 Answers - Comments

A. Sorry but you can't. If they created the folder/file, then they have the rights to modify it as well. This is the problem for administrators everywhere. The one things is, that as an admin you can take ownership of that file and fix any rights issues after the user screws them up. You may have to log into the server as the local admin to do it if they removed the domain admin rights however.

A. Hi Johnny, This is surprisingly simple. All you need to do is turn on "Advanced Features" in the Active Directory Users and Computers snap-in. To do so - 1. Launch Active Directory Users and Computers snap-in. 2. Click on View 3. Select "Advanced Features" Now, you should be able to righ-click on any object and view the Security tab. Navigate to the security tab and from there you should be able to see the permissions on the object. Thanks, sam.

A. It sounds like you have a windows compatible hard drive. The Mac can read the files only and is not able to write with the purchase of additional software. You can reformat the drive to Mac Journal using disc utility to resolve the issue. This will of course mean that all data on the drive will be lost. Email me if you need more detailed instructions.

Q. Hi all, We need to code an Activity on an HTC Desire Android phone that lists all Sensors. As far as I know, you first need to add a permission, e.g. into the Manifest file. Now, I've looked into the list of all possible permissions at the official developer's site, and there are tons of them! Does anyone know which ones do I need to add to my program? Thanks a lot! :)

A. You need an administrator account. If you have two accounts on Vista, one of one them is an administrator, and the other probably isn't. You have to log on to the admin account to make the other profile an admin. Start -> Control Panel -> User Accounts And you should be able to figure it out from there. If your account is an admin., then I think the file may be corrupt, and you could need a good uninstaller, like System Mechanic Professional. It's only $40 at Fred Meyers, or other retail stores. I would very much recommend buying it, because it is what I use to get rid of stupid files on my computer. I have a code that is good for one more computer, if you don't have enough money to buy it. Q. Scenario as follows: Assume that there is a directory called DIR1. I want to have rwxrwsr-x permissions for that directory and all its subdirectories which are created under it. (for sub-directories above permission scheme should applied automatically by the system whenever a new directory is created) How to achieve this using chown, chmod commands. A. Assign that permission to the directory above using: chmod 444 ./ chmod g+s ./ Not very useful, because you need "x" permission to enter a directory. Try using 755 perm instead.

What can I do when access to a certain registry area is denied and I cannot change permissions ?
Q. When trying to install IE7, two registry areas called "mail to" did not allow the installation to write to them, causing the installation to fail. If I go into regedit and try to access these areas I get the message "cannot open mailto - error opening key". If I try to change the permissions, first, it will tell me that I do not have permission to view them, but I have permission to change them. So, I proceed to attempt to change them by adding myself as a group. When I click ok, I will get the message that change cannot be saved and that access was denied. Can someone help ? Thanks.
